SIMPLE MINDS
Empires And Dance
1982 Canada reissue
The third of the first three SM albums, and the last that they made for Arista before the label dropped them.
This is where they start pushing the boundaries a bit. A little more #electronic a little more trippy and #psychedelic with longer songs.
Arista completely fucked up the handling of this great record. Critics loved it, but it was severely under-pressed each time, and it was hard for people to get a hold of.
Luckily, Virgin got the whole catalog, and finally started doing right by this great band.
“I Travel”, “Celebrate”, “Capital City”, “Thirty Frames A Second”; all classic Simple Minds tunes, along with some great weirdo deep cuts.
Underrated art rock of the highest order.

Your friendly neighborhood Vinyl Ape’s recent dance with the hideous bitch goddess of illness continues.
Turns out, for the past 5 days, I’ve had a brutal case of pneumonia, with the extra bonus caveat of a sinus infection.
And as an added bonus, both my wife and son have started to take on some of my symptoms.
Lucky for them, we’ve gotten ahead of it and they are now on the proper medication, as am I.
Doctor: “Push! Push! You’re almost there, I see the head! One last big push! Here we go!”
The being then starts to cough, hack phlegm and snot everywhere, vomit, shake…
Doctor: “Congratulations! It’s a pneumonia!”
Kill me now.
The Cure "Songs of a Lost World" – 2024
A brooding journey through shadowy atmospheres and soaring melancholy. Dense layers of guitars and keys drift between moments of crushing darkness and fragile beauty, carrying echoes of the band’s early intensity while pushing into new emotional depths...
Open Mike Eagle - Neighborhood Gods Unlimited
There’s a few criteria I have for collecting a complete vinyl discography:
- Not too vast; like less than 10 records
- Most of the releases are affordably priced
- Open Mike Eagle records
This is his newest record. First time listening; waited until the vinyl arrived. Does not disappoint. I dig his voice so much.

Hot Chocolate - Man to Man
Holy shit, J! When this came up on Discogs with "Make Offer" on a $24 listing price I doubted that this was in fact Mint. My offer of $20 was accepted and a week later was holding this still-sealed copy of the third Hot Chocolate record.
I can't thank you enough (well, I can't thank you at all) for getting me listening to Hot Chocolate. They are absolutely one of my favorite new old bands. As you explained to me, they are so much more than a funk act (which is plenty mind you); you can hear psychedelia, British Invasion, pop ballads influences in their songs. Just a truly slept upon 1970s era band.
BRIAN ENO & DAVID BYRNE
My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts
1981 Canada pressing
It’s been a long 3 days, as I’ve been trying to tie up a seemingly endless array of loose ends before my family and I leave for California for a few weeks R&R. I haven’t been able to relax and listen to any music in the past three days, but that’s ALL I’m going to be doing for the NEXT three.
Been a long while since I’ve listened to this bonkers classic. Two premiere and singular artists of their time, working together to create a masterpiece of #avantgarde and #experimental art of the highest order.
GANG OF FOUR
Entertainment!
2014 Europe reissue
Let’s get angular.
Other than Jonny Greenwood, there is no guitar player whose style I feel is more analogous to mine than Andy Gill’s.
Violent, slashing, minimalist. Used more as a weapon than as a tool for virtuosity. It was the thing I always loved about Gang Of Four, and still do.
Without Gill, I’m not sure how interesting they would have been. They probably would have sounded like more conventional #newwave or #postpunk , probably devoid of the personality and space his playing provided.
This album in particular is an absolute masterclass in everything that made Andy GREAT.
I miss him immensely, and music owes a lot to him.
MATTHEW SWEET
Girlfriend
2017 Europe MOV Reissue
Yesterday was 100% Fun, today it’s Girlfriend.
After some not good at all records, this is where Matthew finally found himself and broke through. Both Inside AND Earth are borderline unlistenable once you’ve heard everything from Girlfriend on.
I remember first hearing the title track; which was also the first time seeing the gnarly video for it, which featured clips from the rad Japanimation movie Space Adventure Cobra.
As full of great songs as this album is, and as much as I love it, it will always run second place to 100% Fun for me.
However, it’s more like a 1a and 1b.
THE CURE
Songs Of A Lost World
2024 U.S. pressing
FINALLY!
A DECENT SOUNDING PRESSING!!!
This is the “available to U.S. customers only” pressing that was mastered by Bernie Grundman.
To say it’s better than the brickwalled, heavily distorted and hot Miles Showell master is a massive understatement. I was so bummed out with the first copy I bought (the marble stone variant), and was disheartened to read that many more people had the same problem.
I was finally able to get a copy of this U.S. black pressing today, and now I can finally listen to this masterpiece without being irritated or angry.
Clearly the best sounding version of this that exists. People say it’s even better than the 2xLP.
A/B’ing it against the first copy I bought was quite a shocking experience.
If you have any other copy, and you see THIS one, don’t hesitate to upgrade.

MATTHEW SWEET
100% Fun
1995 U.S. pressing
One of the greatest (and most underrated) #powerpop albums of all time.
I know everybody and their mother loves Girlfriend, but this is MY Matthew Sweet album.
“Sick Of Myself” is Top 10 #90s singles for me, maybe even Top 5. It may be my favorite lead off track on any album ever, and it sets the tone perfectly for everything that follows it.
I saw Matthew at one of the WBCN River Raves around when this record came out. He was SO loud and SO awesome. As a second stage artist that year, he blew away half the bands that were on the main stage that day at Great Woods. We met him afterwards at an artist booth where he was meeting fans and signing stuff, and he was the most humble, sweet, down to Earth dude.
I will never ever ever grow tired of 100% Fun.
It is a perfect album.
DAVID BOWIE
Diamond Dogs
1980 Canada reissue
6:27 pm.
80 degrees outside (sorry, Celsius lovers).
Windows wide open, and Bowie blasting at full volume.
In the words of John Steinbeck…
“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter and David Bowie to give it sweetness?”
That may not be a direct quote.
Please don’t fact check that.
Giant Sand - Center of the Universe
Back in the early-mid 90s I went through a huge Giant Sand phase. They were absolutely my favorite band. Since I was in NYC I saw them like 5 times, at various venues around the City (and Maxwell's in Hoboken). This was the height of the CD era so I had to track down their discography as such. Then I kinda lost interest. Joey & John went on to form Calexico (who are one of my favorite bands), and I didn't really follow Howe's later incarnations of the band. But in my late middle age revisiting all the music of my youth I've got a few of my favorite Giant Sand records from that era of the band; the first I found in the wild, the others, including this, I've gotten from Discogs.
The second disc is a live set from the Vermontress Festival Sub Pop put on in Burlington Vermont in '92!

EASY STAR ALL-STARS
Ziggy Stardub
2023 Europe pressing
Limited Edition
Yellow/Red/Green Splatter #vinyl
After listening to Dub Side Of The Moon (as well as DUBBER Side Of The Moon), I went hunting at my local shop for their Radiodread installment, which is #reggae versions of OK COMPUTER.
I couldn’t find that one, but I DID find this, a dub take on David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust.
Another really fun reggae treatment of one of the great albums of all time.
Along with this, I also bought their version of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, which I’ll get to and post later this weekend.
BEATIE WOLFE & BRIAN ENO
Luminal
2025 UK pressing
After really enjoying the Eno/Wolfe record so much the other day, I decided to go out and get the Wolfe/Eno companion to it. And although it’s a bit different than the ambient Lateral, I still like this a great deal.
The main difference here of course is the inclusion of Wolfe’s vocals, which are very haunting a beautiful.
The music remains atmospheric, spacey, and beautifully mellow.
These two’s singular talents are a perfect match for each other.
A wonderful companion piece.
EASY STAR ALL-STARS
Dub Side Of The Moon
2014 U.S. reissue
Green vinyl
I know what you’re thinking… but hear me out…
When I saw this in the used bin, I thought “Really? Reggae Dark Side Of The Moon? Do we really need that?”
The longer I stared at it though, I thought “I really need to hear what this sounds like.”
And you know what? It’s actually AWESOME. I really really dig it. They execute these songs to absolute #reggae perfection.
On “Money”, the beginning substitutes the chinging of a cash register for the sound of sucking bong hits and hacking coughs. After that, the musical skill involved is quite impressive.
And “Us And Them”?
Just really beautiful.
Try to let go of what you THINK it sounds like, and sit back and enjoy it for what it is. A hazy, smoky facsimile of one of the greatest albums ever.
